An anonymous Mega Millions player who bought a ticket in La Plata, Maryland, in 2014, won a $207 million jackpot.

The largest jackpot in Mega Millions history was a $656 million prize that was shared by winners from Kansas, Illinois and Maryland in March 2012. The Mega Millions drawing is not only the largest in the game's history, it's also the third largest in the U.S. lottery jackpot history.

The jackpot may be claimed as $667 million before federal taxes as an annuity paid out over 29 years, or as a cash option of $380 million, according to the Associated Press.

To win the jackpot, tickets must match five white ball numbers plus the mega ball.

The jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of California office workers won $543 million.

Lottery officials increased the estimated jackpot Tuesday for the drawing from $654 million to $667 million, making it the third-largest grand prize in US history.

The Powerball jackpot up for grabs Wednesday night will be a cool $345 million, with a cash value of $199 million. Theirs remains the biggest prize ever awarded by the Virginia Lottery.

The lottery prize is the country's third highest on record, trailing two Powerball jackpots, including a $1.586 billion payout in 2016. They chance of winning with one of the $2 tickets is a slim one in 302.5 million.
