A crew member is quoted by United States media as saying a "malfunctioning comms unit that had overheated" was the cause of the issue, but the White House has not confirmed this.

The plane, a Boeing C-32A, landed safely.

Mrs. Trump was traveling to Philadelphia to visit Thomas. A source described it as a "minor technical issue" and that the first lady was "fine".
