A Tesla Model 3 sedan, its first auto aimed at the mass market, is displayed during its launch in Hawthorne, California, March 31, 2016.

"As Model 3 production and sales continue to grow rapidly, we've achieved a steady volume in manufacturing capacity, allowing us to diversify our product offering to even more customers", said a Tesla spokesperson.

According to the website, the rear-wheel-drive model has a "mid range" battery, a range of 260 miles, 50 miles less than the long-range battery that the more expensive Model 3 is equipped with.

Tesla has had very well-publicized issues with production and then delivery logistics over the previous year. There are five exterior colors and two wheel designs, and the new enhanced Autopilot is a $5,000 option.

The midrange version has the same battery pack as the long-range model but uses fewer cells.

While the automaker has battled production problems with Model 3 vehicles, in the third quarter Tesla said it produced 80,142 vehicles, of which 53,239 were Model 3 sedans.

And while Tesla said last week that only cars ordered by October 15 would be guaranteed delivery before the end of 2018, when the available federal tax credit for their purchase drops from $7,500 to $3,750, the Model 3 ordering website says that deliveries of the mid-range versions are possible within six to 10 weeks, which would get some in before the deadline.

Tesla has also changed the Model 3's option structure, making the rear-wheel drive option available only for the mid-range version of the auto, although Musk said it would also be available as an "off-menu" option for long-range Model 3s over the next week. In May he hinted a late summer or fall arrival and said that shipping the most affordable Model 3 right away would "cause Tesla to lose money and die". If that's the model you still want, Musk noted that it will be available "off menu for another week or so".

Notably, delivery takes six to 10 weeks.

Tesla buyers will no longer be able to get the full $7,500 federal tax credit after December 31 because the company reached the 200,000 sales threshold in July.

Customers taking delivery starting in January will only be able to claim $3,750 for the federal EV tax credit. But will you meet them halfway?
