Dame Judi Dench has become the latest star confirmed for the new film adaptation of Cats.

Dench was set to play Grizabella in the original West End production, but had to withdraw from the show after snapping her achilles tendon.

Deuteronomy is a role that has always been played by a man in stage versions of the musical.

Dench's recent credits include Victoria & Abdul, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films, Philomena, reprising as M in the Bond movie Skyfall, and Kenneth Branagh's Murder on the Orient Express. Ian McKellen will play the patriarch, Old Deuteronomy, while Taylor Swift, James Corden, Laurie Davidson, and Mette Towley will also have roles in the film.

Idris Elba joined "Cats" on October 16, adding to a star-studded cast that already included Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, and Taylor Swift.

Based on TS Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats, the show was first performed in 1981.

Cats is expected to begin filming later this year. She will be seen Disney's "Artemis Fowl" next year. She has received seven Oscar nominations, winning one for Shakespeare in Love.

Hooper and Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, as well as fellow Les Misérables producer Debra Hayward, are producing Cats alongside Monumental Pictures and The Really Useful Group.

Dench is represented by Julian Belfrage Associates and Jackoway Austen. Executive producers are Steven Spielberg, Lloyd Webber and Angela Morrison.
