The Mega Millions lottery may see a streak of jackpot rollovers end as it heads toward a record $1.6 billion drawing on Tuesday.

If the victor goes with the one-time cash option they will receive $904 million.

It would be the largest lottery prize in USA history - and is bound to continue growing - and joins five other top 10 drawings in the last three years.

The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of 11 California office workers won $543 million.

The winning numbers on Friday were 65-53-23-15-70 and the Mega Ball was 7.

The cash option is $565 million, according to Mega Millions.

In October 2017, Mega Millions cut the odds of winning from one in 259 million to one in 302.5 million, following a similar move by Powerball. After federal taxes and state deductions, which vary across the country, winners will generally end up with around half that amount to pay for their yacht shopping. California is one of 10 states to exempt state income tax on lottery winnings.

No tickets matched all six numbers to claim the estimated $667 million grand prize in Tuesday night's drawing.

Friday's prize is second only to a Powerball worth $1.5 billion that was won by 3 tickets on January 13, 2016.

A lucky American could walk away with $1.6 billion (£1.2 billion) in prize money after the latest round of the country's lottery draw failed to produce a victor.
