Rafting is hugely popular with tourists in Costa Rica, which is now in its wet season, causing waterways to flood.

According to the Associated Press, the men who died were identified by Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department as Ernesto Sierra, Jorge Caso, Sergio Lorenzo and Andres Dennis.

Four American tourists were killed and a fifth Costa Rican tourist is missing after a river rafting accident in the Central American country on Saturday, the Red Cross said.

The 14 men boarded three separate rafts around 15:00 local time, which all capsized within five minutes, they said. The remaining tourists and guides survived.

"Throughout the risky ride down the river, all of us struggled to stay above water, swallowing lots of it on the way down as our bodies ricocheted against the rocks in the water while struggling to survive", Castro wrote.

"Most of us were ultimately able to grab hold of rocks or barriers in or around the water and await the rescue teams to get to us".

Authorities said the river was swollen by rains and the National Emergency Commission maintained an alert in the area due to the possibility of flooding.

President Carlos Alvarado expressed his "dismay" at the accident and asked authorities to help the victims' families in any way possible. No hometowns were given, although Miami Herald reported the men who died were from Miami.
