The US is saturated with weapons and doesn't need a new nuclear build-up, former congressman Ron Paul has told RT, commenting on President Donald Trump's threat to quit the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces in Europe (INF) treaty.

President Donald Trump said Monday the United States military will ramp up its arsenal of nuclear weapons to pressure both Russian Federation and China to curb theirs.

"Until people come to their senses, we will build it up", he said.

National Security Adviser John Bolton is now visiting Moscow and discussing the future of the INF treaty with senior Russian officials.

Mr Bolton was told that the USA withdrawal would be a "serious blow" to the non-proliferation regime.

As Mr Bolton began his visit, Moscow warned it would take steps to maintain the balance of nuclear power.

The INF treaty was signed between the Soviet Union and the United States in December 1987, and required the parties to destroy their ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (from 310 to 3,417 miles).

The INF treaty, which came into effect in 1998, is one of the few obstacles still standing in the way of nuclear proliferation after the USA withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty (ABM) in 2002, the other one being the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START).
