Steve Carell has been tapped as a male lead opposite Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston in Apple's untitled morning show drama series.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Acton native will appear in an upcoming drama for Apple that offers "an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning".

Carell previously played TV weather presenter Brick Tamland in Anchorman and news presenter Evan Baxter in Bruce Almighty. It makes his first TV series role since his Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning turn on NBC's The Office.

Witherspoon made her main role television debut in last year's Big Little Lies, for which she also executive produced the series, and it resulted in widespread acclaim for both the actress and the series, with a second season now in production and set to debut sometime in 2019. Media Res, Aniston and Witherspoon are the principle owners of the show.

In his first series regular part since leaving Dunder Mifflin, Carell plays Mitch Kessler, a morning show anchor who is "struggling to maintain relevance in a changing media landscape". It will be directed and also executive produced by Mimi Leder whose credits include The Leftovers, Shameless and ER.

They are due to open on January 18 and 25 respectively.
