Asked by the presiding judge at the court in the northern city of Oldenburg whether the charges against him were accurate, Niels Hoegel replied "yes".

During that trial, he said he intentionally brought about cardiac crises in roughly 90 patients in Delmenhorst because he enjoyed the feeling of being able to resuscitate them.

The Agency notes that if Hegel is found guilty in the murder of 100 people, it will become one of the most brutal serial killers in post-war Germany.

More than 130 bodies of patients who died on Hoegel's watch have been exhumed, in a case investigators have called "unprecedented in Germany to our knowledge".

Hoegel is believed to be responsible for the death of more than 130 patients, but the cremation of more possible victims makes determining the exact number of victims almost impossible, according to the British broadcaster BBC.

Hundreds of relatives backed the new trial against Hoegel, even though the former nurse's sentence won't substantially change.

Additional convictions could make it harder for Hoegel to get parole.

Niels Hoegel, 41, has already spent almost a decade in jail on a life term for other patient deaths. Prisoners serving life sentences are usually considered for parole after 15 years.

Niels Hoegel, 41, confessed to killing his patients - between the ages of 34 and 96 - at two hospitals in northern Germany between 2000 and 2005.

In past hearings, Hoegel said he felt euphoric when he managed to bring a patient back to life, and devastated when he failed. "The aim is for Hoegel to stay in custody as long as possible".

In 2005 Hoegel was caught injecting an unprescribed drug into a patient in Delmenhorst.

Authorities are also investigating why health officials did not report the crimes earlier.

Authorities are pursuing criminal cases against former staff at the two medical facilities.

Hoegel is accused of giving his victims various non-prescribed drugs, in an attempt to show off his resuscitation skills to colleagues and fight off boredom.

During the trial Hegel means admitted to a psychiatrist that killed more than 30 people.
