It's like every conspiracy theorist's dream came true - NASA freely posted an image of what it describes as a crashed'flying saucer from out of space'.

However, the image is probably not exactly what alien hunters have been waiting for.

The "flying saucer" isn't an alien spaceship though - it is the remnants of the robot spaceship Genesis that was created to study the Sun and launched in 2001.

However, the story of this spacecraft is still an interesting one - Genesis launched in 2001 to study the Sun and featured a sample-return capsule that was similar in shape to a flying saucer.

NASA has reiterated its confirmation that a flying saucer crash-landed in the Utah desert in 2004 after being tracked on radar and pursued by multiple helicopters, but alas, it's not what ufologists might think.

As the return capsule was making its way back to Earth, its parachutes failed to open as planned, causing the unexpectedly hard landing, NASA said.

"The Genesis mission had been orbiting the Sun collecting solar wind particles that are usually deflected away by Earth's magnetic field", says NASA, noting that at least some of the samples were still in good condition despite the crash.

'So far, Genesis-related discoveries include new details about the composition of the Sun and how the abundance of some types of elements differ across the Solar System.

"These results have provided intriguing clues into details of how the Sun and planets formed billions of years ago", NASA added.
