"It's a good reminder that in (the jar) there could be 200 trillion rotavirus cells, 20 billion Shigella bacteria, and 100,000 parasitic worm eggs", he said.

The Microsoft founder and billionaire philanthropist opened a three-day conference in Beijing entitled the "Reinvented Toilet Expo" to show new types of lavatories that break down human waste.

Mr Gates said of the technology: "The current toilet simply sends the waste away in the water, whereas these toilets don't have the sewer".

The stunt was part of his speech at the Reinvented Toilet Expo event - a showcase for new toilet technologies. "And I definitely never thought that Melinda would have to tell me to stop talking about toilets and faecal sludge at the dinner table".

"So when I talk about components of this toilet being made in China, others in Thailand, others in the U.S. - you really want to be bringing together all of that IQ so that you're getting that combination".

"They take both the liquid and solids and do chemical work on it, including burning it in most cases". Failure to do so can cause diseases not limited to dysentery and cholera, which kill many thousands of people every year.

The ideas are being hailed by Gates as the "most significant advances in sanitation in almost 200 years", the news site reports. The convention boasted new products that challenge the traditional sanitation methods, which the World Health Organization says still eludes 2.3 billion people around the world - a problem that leads to the spread of deadly diseases.

"Human waste that is properly handled can be a very economically attractive investment due to the health benefits", said Guy Hutton, a senior adviser for water, sanitation and hygiene with Unicef in NY, in an interview. It's no longer a question of if we can do it.

That 500,000 figure is the number of children who die annually because of water contaminated with human waste that hasn't been processed properly.

The initial demand for the reinvented toilet will be in schools, apartment buildings and community toilet facilities, he added.

"China has an opportunity to launch a new category of innovated non-sewered sanitation solutions that will benefit millions of people worldwide".

Gates said it would be a mistake for the United States to cut aid.

The world's two largest economies have been engaged in a tit-for-tat trade war over tariffs for much of the year.
