He joined fast bowlers Danny Morrison (v India at Napier in 1999) and Shane Bond (v Australia at Hobart in 2007) as the only New Zealanders to take an ODI hat-trick.

Boult (3-54) nailed Pakistan's top order with the wickets of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez off successive deliveries after New Zealand posted a decent 9-266.

Ardent Pakistan fans had to dig a little deeper for optimism when a double strike ended the 63-run fourth-wicket partnership, as Pakistan fell to 73/5. "It's better if he focuses on his batting", Sarfraz said.

"I think the new ball is a key part of the game and we know what early wickets can do to chasing totals".

The homeside was 8-3 and then 85-6 before fighting back, skipper Sarfraz Ahmed leading the way with a 69-ball 64 before he was bowled by Colin de Grandholme at the end of the 41st over.

But once the Taylor-Latham fourth wicket standof 130 was broken, Pakistan's leg-spinner Shadab Khan derailed the innings with a burst of three wickets in the 42nd over to leave New Zealand at 210-7.

Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat, New Zealand's George Worker and Colin Munro didn't last long, the former edging tamely to Sarfraz Ahmed off Shaheen Afridi (4/46) before the teenage sensation removed his fellow opener lbw.

Shadab dismissed Kane Williamson for 27 before Taylor and Latham joined at 78-3. Imad reached fifty before Southee got his man, while Ferguson claimed the wicket of Shaheen as New Zealand got their series off to a promising start. Only 20 of Latham's 68 runs came from boundaries, but the Kiwis were hitting five runs an over without breaking sweat.

Taylor had Latham in good support as New Zealand looked set for a big total at 199-3 after 40 overs before Shadab took three wickets in the 42nd over.

He dismissed Latham leg-before and did the same to Henry Nicholls (nought) the very next ball, before removing De Grandhomme two balls later when he edged to first slip without scoring.

The remaining matches are in Abu Dhabi on Friday and in Dubai on Sunday.
