Variety reports Chris Meledandri, co-owner of Illumination Entertainment and the producer behind Despicable Me, Sing, and The Secret Life of Pets, has been entrusted by Universal Pictures to bring the big green ogre and Puss in Boots back to the screen.

Not only is Meledandri planning to reinvigorate the Shrek films, but the 2011 spinoff Puss in Boots is also looking to get some form of a follow-up.

Fans of the franchise will be delighted to learn Meledandri is also keen on reuniting the original voice cast for the upcoming reboot. Meledandri was initially asked to oversee both Illumination and DreamWorks, but passed on the opportunity to run the latter in favor of focusing on the creative movie-making process.

In addition to its initial box-office, audience and critical success, Shrek remains a meme-worthy cultural touchstone with millenials who grew up with the films - which means it won't just be kids and parents flocking to theaters to see what comes out of the swamp this time.

"When you look back on those vocal performances they're awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations", Meledandri said.

"You want to find something in the narrative that really feels like a departure", he said. In line with this, he wants to maintain the voice cast that includes Mike Myers as Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey and Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots.

It makes sense, given the original film is nearly old enough to buy a beer, but Meledandri said he's dead keen on retaining the most crucial element of the entire saga: the voice talent of the movie's original stars.

Meledandi speaks of the reboot saying, "There's a tremendous amount of fun to be had in that world, but it's a high bar to find a story that's truly world".
