County official says reports of active shooter at school in North Carolina turn out to be malfunctioning water heater. He said the call said buses are being staged at Lowe's Food across from the schools.

As of 8 a.m., the scene is still active and students are still on lockdown.

Pender Schools clarified Friday morning's situation by stating, "There was a report of an active shooter situation at Topsail High School this morning after noises were heard coming from the top of the building".

However Commissioner George Brown told WECT there is a malfunctioning piece of equipment at the school that sounds like gunfire when it makes a noise. The earlier report of shots fired provoked a massive response by law enforcement and caused the school district to reroute buses and put schools on lockdown.

According to local news outlets, this is the second time this year the high school has had reports of a gun-related incident.

It shares a campus with a middle school and an elementary school.

Topsail High School is about 105 miles southeast of Raleigh.

There were no injuries as of 7:03 a.m., Pender County Sheriff's Capt. James Rowell told WWAY. It has around 1,300 students enrolled.
