The Associated Press is projecting that Missouri voters have approved a statewide proposition that will increase the state's minimum wage.

The current minimum wage in Arkansas is $8.50 an hour. The proposition also increases the penalty for employers caught paying less than the minimum wage.

Voters on Tuesday approved the proposed initiated act, which raises the state's minimum wage to $9.25 an hour on January 1.

There was no organized opposition to the measure, although lawmakers could still alter state statutes to roll the increase back.

Roughly two-thirds of Arkansans voted "Yes" to Arkansas Issue 5, the Minimum Wage Increase Initiative. The law then raises the wage to $10 an hour on January 1, 2020, and $11 an hour on January 1, 2021.
