It is believed that Long killed himself at the bar, Dean said.

"He gave his all ... he went in to save lives, to save other people", Dean said.

Sgt. Ron Helus was a 29-year veteran of the police force.

Sergeant Buschow said he had "no doubt" that Sergeant Helus and a highway patrol officer who joined him at the scene of the shooting had saved lives. He was later found dead at or near an office in the business.

"It's a horrific incident", Dean said."It's part of the horrors that are happening in our country and everywhere, and I think it's impossible to put any logic or any sense to the senseless".

The gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood and his face partly covered, witnesses told TV stations.

"I was actually about to leave when you start hearing pop, pop, pop. Pop, pop, pop. There was probably three or four, I hit the ground", John Hedge, at the bar with his stepfather, told CNN affiliate KABC. He shot the security guard. "Well, I don't want to say he was dead, but he was shot".

The gunman opened fire at around 11:20 p.m. (1:20 a.m. CT Thursday).

The massacre has rocked the city of Thousand Oaks - known for its sleepy bedroom community and low crime rates.

"Borderline was our safe space after, for lack of a better term, it was our home for the probably 30 or 45 of us who are all from the greater Ventura County area who were in Vegas".

"There were people hiding in restrooms, people hiding in attics", he added. Others jumped over chairs and broke windows to get out. The weapon usually holds 10 rounds and one in the chamber, but the gunman used an extended magazine in this shooting, Dean said.

He said both they both managed to escape.

The bar is also close to several other universities, including California State University Channel Islands in Camarillo, Pepperdine University in Malibu and Moorpark College in Moorpark.

Borderline Bar & Grill is a western-style facility that hosts theme nights such as country, salsa and swing dancing.

Police said several hundred people were inside the venue, which was hosting a "college country night" for students.

"(He) said to her, 'Hey I got to go handle a call. "We just learned that our niece Alaina was one of the victims of last night's shooting at the Borderline bar in Thousand Oaks", Mowry-Housley said in a statement.

"He didn't say anything, at least not that we could hear", Estron added.

Nicholas Champion was among those who survived both shootings and spoke about his experience to CBS News.

The shooting took place just over 4 miles from the Rams' practice facility, which is on the campus of California Lutheran University, and 7 miles from the team's corporate headquarters in Agoura Hills.

Dean said Long was a veteran of the U.S. marine corps.
