Republicans warned Trump past year against replacing Sessions, but some of that resistance appeared to break down by late August, when several key GOP senators signaled to Trump that he could find a new attorney general after the midterm elections.

The future of Robert Mueller's investigation into alleged Russian collusion with the Trump election campaign team is in question after the President sacked the man who oversees it all.

On the heels of this, CNN is reporting Thursday that the special counsel has begun writing the final Russian Federation report.

Whitaker was hired as a CNN legal commentator a year ago for several months, before leaving the role in September 2017 to head to the Justice Department as chief of staff to now-former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

The Justice Department has declined to answer whether ethics officials have been asked to review if Whitaker should recuse himself from the Mueller probe. He has previously suggested drastically reducing the budget of Mueller's special counsel probe, in order to thwart Mueller's threat to the president's constitutional mandate.

He said he knows little about Whitaker, other than his portrayal as a staunch "Trump loyalist".

Earlier, at a White House news conference, Trump said the Mueller investigation was not good for the United States.

Phil Sawyer said he's been concerned about Trump's politics for some time.

Some senior Republicans, such as former presidential candidate and Utah Senator-elect Mitt Romney, have urged Whitaker to allow the Mueller investigation to run unimpeded.

Top Democrats on multiple committees wrote to key Trump administration officials Wednesday night informing them that committees will be investigating Sessions' departure.

Whitaker, a former USA attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, had served as Sessions's chief of staff since September 2017.

"I think Congress should regulate things that harm people, and that is the hard drugs and the like that dramatically hurt citizens, cause violent crime in our communities, and those should be regulated", he said. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that "protecting Mueller and his investigation is paramount".

"Congress must take bipartisan action to protect the integrity of Mueller's investigation", Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 Democrat in the House of Representatives, said after Democrats won a House majority in Tuesday's elections.

While speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Conway explained President Trump is not planning to use the resignation as a way to shut down the Mueller probe.

Even after he arrived at the Justice Department, Whitaker harbored frustration about the length of the special counsel probe and doubts about the scope of Mueller's authority, a person familiar with the matter said.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has been overseeing the Mueller investigation since Sessions recused himself from the investigation previous year due of his involvement in Trump's campaign. But Mr Sessions's replacement will have the power to do so, or end the inquiry.

Sessions, 71, has a long political history in Alabama.

By Thursday morning, more than 1,000 people said on a Facebook page for the event that they planned to attend, and more than 3,200 said they were interested.
