Disney has announced a new live-action Star Wars series about the adventures of Rogue One's Cassian Andor, with Diego Luna reprising his role.

Diego Luna starred alongside Felicity Jones in new Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. "I have so many memories of the great work we did together and the relationships I made throughout the journey". Given how Rogue One ends, this TV series clearly won't be a sequel unless it's a highly metaphysical and ponderous meditation on the afterlife.

Disney+ will mine the Pixar character pantheon to create a new animated series based on the Monster's Inc franchise. As Variety first reported, Disney is developing a number of limited series centered on popular characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or MCU in fanboy and fangirl parlance. Director Jon Favreau is spearheading The Mandalorian, an origin story based on the warrior race from which bounty hunters Jango Fett and son Boba Fett sprung. A release date for the series has not yet been announced, but production will begin in 2019.

Little is known about the series at this time, including when it will launch on Disney's streaming service, but it seems to indicate that Lucasfilm is planning on going full-steam ahead with television projects for the galaxy far, far away rather than its once-robust slate of spin-off films.

The company says the drama is in the works for Disney's new streaming service and follows the adventures of the rebel spy during the formative years of the Rebellion. The company believes that customers are moving more deeply into the world of subscription streaming and it needs to be there to vacuum up their dollars.

"In this era of unprecedented consumer choice, brands matter more than ever", Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger said on an earnings call with investors as the "Star Wars" news broke on Thursday.
