Employees in a home improvement firm in Zunyi, Guizhou province in China were discovered being abused by their managers for failing to meet sales targets.

The workers were also reportedly ordered to eat cockroaches by the management, who believed they had let the team down.

The video explicitly shows staff holding their noses as they down large plastic cups full to the brim of yellow liquid, later confirmed to be urine.

The three accused managers were jailed for five to 10 days after the incident, reported the South China Morning Post.

A widely-shared video posted on Chinese social media site Weibo shows a male employee standing in the middle of a circle, getting whipped with a belt.

Then, several employees can be seen each taking a cup of yellow liquid and drinking it front of a Power Point presentation screen. This was followed by jail sentence for three of the company's managers.

The managers previously punished low-achieving employees by forcing them to eat mustard or chilli, according to China News, but penalties have escalated since October to eating cockroaches and receiving beatings with a belt.

Other punishments involved drinking vinegar or toilet water, selling condoms and sanitary pads on the street and having their head shaved, according to other text messages in the post.

Many people on social media have asked why the employees did not quit their jobs, but one staff member told Pear Video that they were owed two months' pay by the company.

According to the report, staff were subjected to a range of weird punishments, including being forced to eat mustard, eat insects, drink water that had socks in it and having their head shaved.
