Among those outside the hospital was Ellen Rivera, who said she had survived the October 2017 slaughter of 58 people at an outdoor concert in Las Vegas - the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.

A gunman opened fire on a crowd of mostly college students and young adults dancing at a crowded country and western bar in a suburb of Los Angeles late on Wednesday night, killing 12 people including a sheriff's deputy, police said.

He escaped death a year ago when a gunman killed 58 people in Las Vegas.

"At that point, I grabbed as many people around me as I could and grabbed them down under the pool table we were closest to until he ran out of bullets", Wennerstrom told reporters. Orfanos made it out alive that night, and on Thursday morning, his mother, Susan Schmidt-Orfanos was hoping her son had been lucky again.

Long was in the Marine Corps from 2008 to 2013, reaching the rank of corporal and serving as a machine gunner in Afghanistan.

The gunman was found dead.

"He was just a great guy, a gentle soul", said Buschow, adding that Helus recently took up fly-fishing and loved taking mountain trips with his son.

Telemachus Orfanos was a graduate of Thousand Oaks High School and later joined the Navy, according to his Facebook page.

College students out for a good time and a veteran lawman on patrol became heroes during a shooting at a country music bar by pulling people to safety and rushing into the gunfire.

Justin Meek had recently graduated from university and was working as a caregiver, supporting families with special needs.

Justin Meek, 23, was a keen musician. California Lutheran University president Chris Kimball said that he had "heroically saved lives".

Ventura County Sheriff's Office Sergeant Ron Helus, a 29-year veteran with a wife and son, was shot and killed inside.

How did the shooting happen?

Police say the suspect was dressed in black, and forced his way into the bar after shooting the bouncer.

The killer deployed a smoke device and used a.45-calibre handgun.

Dean says the report of the shooting came as Helus was on the phone with his wife.

"It was a huge panic".

"I remember when I was on the ground, seeing a girl getting trampled". He described what they told him to the affiliate.

Other patrons smashed through a window and helped people flee through it.

He first shot a security guard standing outside, then went in and opened fire inside the nightclub, the sheriff said. "Since he can no longer be with us, we will hold a memorial in his honor".

"They found him", Jason Coffman told reporters, his voice breaking, at the scene of the Thousand Oaks shooting on Friday.

One survivor, Nicholas Champion, said a group of them were at the venue on Wednesday.

"It's the second time in about a year and a month that this has happened", he said in a local television interview. "It's a big thing for us". "All we could think about was like we need to get out".

"Borderline was our safe space", Brendan Kelly, who survived both attacks, told ABC News.
