It was a goal of such quality that perhaps it deserved to decide any match but despite Ronaldo's 65th minute volley, his new side came undone by his old one with two goals in the last five minutes securing Manchester United's most famous Champions League away win of the post-Ferguson era.

"In handsome Italian they insulted me for 90 minutes", he told BT Sport. At the end I didn't insult anyone, I just did the gesture that I wanted to hear them more. "When you play in this atmosphere, when you have those fans, it's just lovely".

However, Juan Mata's late free-kick and Alex Sandro's own goal handed Manchester United a dramatic late victory and allowed them to claim all three points to keep their hopes of qualifying for the last 16 alive.

Lingard, who came through Manchester United's youth academy, posted a photograph of him mocking Ronaldo's goal celebration, in which he raised his jersey to display a set of very chiseled abs, along with the hashtag 'Who did it better?'

Juventus players Leonardo Bonucci and Paulo Dybala confronted Mourinho with United captain Ashley Young intervening as Mourinho was led off the pitch by a UEFA official.

It was Juve's first loss in any competition this season.

"When I work for a club like Manchester United I need to forget my past as in those 90 minutes I represent Manchester United", Mourinho said.

"But the others didn't forget".

"If we keep conceding goals before the opponents there will be a day where we can not come back so we have to grow up in our approach, because it is clear the team is growing up, but we have to grow up in our compactness and start matches well".

Victory over Guardiola's side would cut the gap at the top to six points but Mourinho refused to say the derby is a chance for his team to get back into the title race.

Juventus sits atop Group H, two points ahead of United. "I only get angry with my team when they go to sleep every now and then".

Next up for United is Sunday's derby at Manchester City, where a good result for the visitor would truly silence Mourinho's numerous critics this season.
