Adm. Nils Andreas Stensoenes, the head of the Royal Norwegian Navy, said Thursday during a news conference. The crew of 127 was evacuated amid fears the ship will sink.

The tanker, the Sola TS, was slightly damaged and it appears that it did not spill oil.

Up to eight people were injured in the collision in the Hjeltefjord near Bergen, Norway, when the KNM Helge Ingstad crashed into a vessel from Malta.

It was being towed out of the harbour when it somehow managed to ram the frigate.

Norway's Accident Investigation Board, which has opened an inquiry, had initially said a tugboat had also been involved in the collision but the Navy later denied that.

Update: Frigate understood to sustain stb bow hull breach with massive water ingress, she's said to develop heavy bow tilt.

Coast guard deputy director Johan Marius Ly said helicopter fuel has leaked from the frigate.

The frigate Helge Ingstad, now listing heavily to its port side, is loaded with torpedoes and weapons systems said to be unstable as a result of the collision.

An image published by Norwegian broadcaster NRK showed that water had nearly reached the level of the frigate's helicopter platform. Tanker said not to suffer serious damages, as of 0530 UTC she was near collision site, moving in northern direction at dead slow speed, escorted by tug.

The KNM Helge Ingstad frigate took on water and was at risk of sinking.

"We are doing everything we can to save the ship", Lieutenant Colonel Ivar Moen told AFP. Launched in 2007, the warship is named after the famous Norwegian Arctic explorer.

The frigate was part of NATO's Standing Naval Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 1), which participated in the live portion of Exercise "Trident Juncture 2018", which ended on 7 November.

Comment: Again, laden massive cargo ship collided with Navy frigate, similar to accidents which occurred with USA Nay frigates in Japan and off Singapore, recently.
