Remarkably, six of those years came without Somerville playing top-level cricket, with the Wellington-born 34-year-old playing grade cricket in Sydney from 2008-2014, before being picked for New South Wales.

However, with no Australian selection in sight due to the spinning talents of Nathan Lyon and Steve O'Keefe, Somerville returned to New Zealand this year where the Auckland Aces claimed him at the recommendation of former Black Caps skipper Daniel Vettori.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won his second successive toss and elected to bat first against Pakistan in the second One-Day global on Friday.

"Despite a period of rest, Todd's knee has, unfortunately, not responded as well as we had hoped", selector Gavin Larsen said.

"We've been keeping a close eye on Will and like the look of his all-round game and skillset".

As such, the door opened for Somerville to join Ish Sodhi and Ajaz Patel as the spinners unit for the Test squad.

Somerville will fly out to the UAE on Saturday to link up with the Black Caps ahead of the first test in Abu Dhabi on November 16. Boult (3-54) nailed Pakistan's top order with the wickets of Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam and Mohammad Hafeez off successive deliveries after New Zealand posted a decent 266-9.
