Police report multiple stabbing 'incident' in Melbourne

Victoria Police responded to a major incident on Friday afternoon on Bourke Street in Melbourne, Australia.

Victoria Police said officers responded to reports of a vehicle fire before they were confronted by the man.

In a later statement, police said the man assaulted police, fled on foot, then was shot while lunging at police with the knife.

"Police shot the male in the chest and he is now in a critical condition in hospital", Superintendent Clayton said, adding the officers are OK.

Victoria Police confirmed they were not looking for any further suspects, and said there were no known links to terrorism at this stage of investigations.

A second person suffered a head injury and has been taken to hospital.

Video uploaded onto social media shows the suspect running at two police officers with a large knife as the blue ute burns in the background.

About 4.31pm, police send out a media alert asking the public to avoid the Bourke Street area.

Police said the scene had been cordoned off, and it was being "made safe" by a bomb response unit.

'The exact circumstances are yet to be determined at this stage.

It's understood a third person has also been taken to hospital.

Counter-terror officers have swooped on the scene.

Witness Fiona told 3AW her friends had seen someone with a knife in the area and she'd been told he'd stabbed a security guard. I heard at least one gunshot initially, ' one said.

SBS News has contacted Victoria Police for comment.

Sarah Werkmeister, a witness, told The Herald Sun: "All I saw was the auto on fire, and the police cuffing someone on the ground".

It comes as a trial continues into the horrifying rampage in Bourke St in January past year.
