The Rays are sending outfielder Mallex Smith back to the Mariners - they got Smith from the Mariners in 2017 - for outfielder Guillermo Heredia and catcher Mike Zunino, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Rosenthal notes the deal is pending a medical review and has not yet been officially announced.

Zunino, a Cape Coral native and University of Florida product, won the Wilson defensive player of the year award for catchers, another indication of the solid work he has done behind the plate for the Mariners over 5 1/2 seasons. He had a really good offensive year in 2017 but regressed this past season, finishing with a.201/.259/.410 triple-slash line along with 20 homers and 44 RBI in 405 PA.

The Mariners then immediately sent him to the Rays along with Ryan Yarbrough and minor leaguer Carlos Vargas in exchange for Drew Smyly. He played all three outfield positions and showed improvement in that part of his game as well. Smith just missed Super 2 arbitration eligibility and is under team control through 2022.

Zunino is eligible for arbitration and projected to make $4.2 million, and is under team control through 2020.

The deal comes two days after rumours of a potential Mariners rebuild started to surface.
