Rusape Horror Road Crash: Bus conductor, driver flee accident scene, whereabouts unknown

The wreckage of Bolt Cutter and Smart Express buses that collided head-on on the Harare-Mutare Highway, killing 47 people and leaving 70 others injured.

The President said he learnt with deep sadness of the death of 47 people last night, adding that the loss of so many lives in just one traffic incident raise serious questions about the behaviour being exhibited on the country's roads, especially that of public transport operators.

It also quoted a Police Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi as confirming earlier that so far 30 bodies had been identified at the accident scene.

The accident occurred at Torish Farm, about 3km outside Rusape.

Makoni district administrator and chairman of the district Civil Protection Unit Mr Darlington Museka said Rusape General Hospital mortuary was overwhelmed and they had engaged Nyaradzo Funeral Services for assistance. "I can not say much as I am running around following this tragedy".

Pictures from the scene showed the two buses with bodies and luggage strewn across the road.

Well wishers could be seen helping ferry the injured to hospital.

One of the buses tried to pass two haulage trucks on a stretch of the road where overtaking is prohibited, resulting in the collision with an oncoming bus, Ellen Gwaradzimba, the provincial minister for Manicaland province, told the state broadcaster.

"The bus was travelling to Zambia when the driver lost control", she said.
