Steven Gerrard's Rangers missed a chance to pick up a famous result away to Spartak Moscow on Thursday night, eventually losing 4-3 in UEFA Europa League action.

Both sides scored in their own net in a thrilling first half that saw five goals scored, before Raul Riancho's men roared back with two goals in 66 seconds to snatch the points in Moscow.

And they conceded twice in a minute just before the hour mark, when Luiz Adriano headed home on the rebound and Goldson deflected Sofiane Hanni's strike past Allan McGregor.

"However, football is about levels and if you don't do the basics well enough and defend properly, then high-level teams will normally punish you and that was the case here". Players who have had a lot of praise, who have done very, very well to get us to this opportunity, just didn't do the basics well.

Moments after Middleton's first European goal gave Rangers the lead for a third time after 42 minutes, Alfredo Morelos had a strike ruled out for a debatable offside call from the Croatian officials.

"Normally, to come here and score three goals you get a result, but I'm bitterly disappointed with how we defended".

"Our message at the interval was to defend better and we could win, with the worse case we come away with something from the match".

When describing his side's defending which saw them concede four goals, Gerrard said that underage footballers can generally clear the ball with either foot. But we had a awful five minutes and were punished for it. It will go to the wire, which is what we predicted at the beginning.

When asked if it was a big decision, Gerrard said: "It is now of course and it's hard as a manager to answer those questions like that without saying the wrong thing and getting into big, big trouble". Villarreal becomes bigger and more exciting now but we were under no illusions before the game. We should have had four goals, but that is another story.

"Tonight's result makes the challenge a bit more hard".
