Lewis Hamilton is no stranger to striking, experimental choices of clothing, and the Formula One world champion made another bold statement on Thursday.

"We have got the vehicle back to what we know and what we feel more comfortable with at the last two races", said Vettel in the Brazil paddock, "so hopefully we can keep that up and keep competitive here and in Abu Dhabi and give [Mercedes] a very hard time".

"This year definitely there have been times when he has been fundamental in us winning races".

"It's not something I've asked Valtteri, if he'd want that, but I don't think he's going to want that".

This season has 21 races, as does 2019, but Formula One has also been talking to Miami for a US street race and Zandvoort in the Netherlands about a return to the coastal circuit last visited in 1985.

"I'm someone who really loves racing but the season is long. I'd want to win by winning myself".

"The turnaround is so short, you start preparing for your next season often as soon as the season is done".

"Getting your mind turned".

The newly crowned world champion, who took his fifth title at the last round in Mexico, also said he had no plans to concede a victory to his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas at this weekend's Brazilian Grand Prix. "That's very hard. Then you have to find a way of switching off and recovering at the same time".

Mercedes are hoping to tie up the constructors' championship this weekend, and will do so as long as Ferrari do not outscore them by more than 12 points.

Governing body the FIA says a series of measures have been taken to ensure F1 personnel are at reduced risk leaving the circuit, a time at which incidents have become increasingly common in recent years.

"But I am really hopeful we get in the auto this weekend and it feels more normal and we are more competitive", Hamilton added. "We're trying to win", he told reporters. "Whoever has the most points has won it. We will see how it turns out". The team will be focused on maximising their points but Hamilton dismissed suggestions he would gift Bottas a victory at Interlagos.

Vettel went from seeming title favourite in the summer to being blown away by Lewis Hamilton in the second half of the season. He's going to want to win it in his own way.

"You all know what my goal will be for this weekend, so it's going to be up to me and I need to perform at my best level to fight for the win". I think he can do it himself.
