Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came closest to a goal all night when his shot cannoned back off of the post a minute after the break, and from there on it was a backs-against-the-wall performance from the Portuguese side.

Arsenal midfielders Matteo Guendouzi and Aaron Ramsey were both visibly upset after Welbeck, who is out of contract at the end of the campaign, went down after jumping to win a header.

Following the match, which finished scoreless, Unai Emery confirmed that the forward had been sent to the hospital.

"It is mentally challenging (playing after a teammate is injured) but sometimes it comes with the game, and Danny has had a lot of injuries", winger Alex Iwobi told BT Sport.

The Gunners were beaten 2-0 at home by champions Manchester City in their opening competitive game under the Spaniard before losing 3-2 at Chelsea in their second match. We are going to wait [for updates].

"We are very happy with Reiss".

"It's a very big injury for him, for us, for all people who like and love him as a person".

He has scored five goals in six Bundesliga appearances and impressed in two appearances in the Champions League.

He wasn't the only Gunner injured, though, as Stephan Lichsteiner was also forced off with an apaprent muscle injury.

"Lichtsteiner is muscular", Emery added.

"But when he had the injury we needed to play with a right-back which was the reason we played with Ainsley [Maitland-Niles]".
