The source said the killers dissolved the journalist's dismembered body in acid in one of the rooms at Consul General Mohammed al-Otaibi's residence.

The Saudis have also denied comments allegedly made by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman describing Khashoggi to be a unsafe Islamist.

Turkish media had reported earlier in the week - again, always citing anonymous sources - that trace amounts of acid had been discovered in a well at the Saudi consulate property in Istanbul, and in the sewer system around it. Turkish officials have also suggested that the orders came from the highest levels of the Saudi royal family, but Ankara has repeatedly said it does not believe the crown prince's father, King Salman, was behind the killing.

"It would appear, according to the source that during that two week period, acid was used to dispose of the dismembered body of Jamal Khashoggi", Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons said, adding that the residence was searched by Turkish investigators two weeks after the killing.

Finally, it would require the Republican firebrands administration to write reports on Saudi Arabia's inquiry into Mr Khashoggi's murder and the state of human rights in the country.

Speaking ahead of his departure for France to attend commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, Erdoğan said Saudi Arabia knows the killer of Jamal Khashoggi is among a group of 15 people who arrived in Turkey one day ahead of the October 2 killing.

Khashoggi disappeared after he entered the consulate on October 2 even as his fiancée Hatice Cengiz waited outside the building.

"Saudi attorney general arrived in Turkey to dodge the column", he said, referring to the visit of Saudi Arabia's top prosecutor Saud al-Mujeb to obtain information about the case and his meeting with Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Irfan Fidan, who is leading the investigation.

His body has not been found.
