"He's still kind of there, [no] huge jumps", the coach said. It hasn't translated to many wins, but it's a fun group to watch in NY, and it should inspire hope for the future.

Knicks star forward Kristaps Porzingis, who hasn't played a minute since ACL surgery nine months ago, took control of the narrative surrounding his progress Thursday.

But the disconnect between how a players feels in terms of their own personal rehab and the team's understandable caution to protect its main asset can sometimes cause friction.

Fizdale says the 23-year-old is only shooting and jogging lightly, but Porzingis posted images showing him sprinting down an outdoor track. The injury ended a promising season in which Porzingis averaged 22.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game, and made his first All-Star team. "It's just one of those injuries we're going to take our time with, make sure it's right", Fizdale said. The Knicks do not have a specific timetable for his return.

Fizdale adds that New York's coaching staff is focused on the active roster, and "not even planning on KP at all".

"I'm looking at these guys [who are available to play] right now". "I don't want to get distracted personally as the coach, anxious about if and when he's coming back. I'd rather be focused on the day-to-day task with these guys, and when he gets back that'll just be a gift for me".
