In several clips, they can be seen wiping down sinks, coffee cups and glasses with the same used towel.

Chinese authorities are inspecting several major global hotels after hidden camera video showed room cleaning workers using soiled towels to clean cups and glasses and other questionable practices. Titled The Secret of the Cups, the video has racked up more than 30 million views.

An activist blogger who uses the pseudonym "Huazong" posted the video late Wednesday on his verified account on Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter.

The roughly 12-minute-long video features global chains such as Hilton Worldwide Holdings-owned Conrad Beijing and Waldorf Astoria, as well as Marriott International's Sheraton and Le Royal Meridien.

In December 2017, members of custodial staff at some luxury hotels were filmed using the same brush to clean toilets, wash basins and even crockery.

China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement it was concerned by the reports and had asked authorities in five provinces to investigate the issue, which has already prompted a flurry of apologies from big-name hotel chains. The Park Hyatt in Beijing called what happened an isolated occurrence.

"The problem has long existed in almost 100 percent of hotels around the country", he wrote on his Weibo account.

Some hotels pictured that later issued apologies included the Le Royal Meridian Shanghai and two Sheraton hotels in other Chinese cities, all operated by Marriott, as well as the Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai, one of the Hilton hotel brands.

The cleaner had received training on proper room cleaning, the hotel said.

The Mandarin Oriental hotel in the commercial hub of Shanghai vowed "it would not tolerate the inappropriate cleaning behavior in guest rooms shown in the video". A worker at a Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Shanghai uses a gel that the video describes as shampoo to clean cups.
