Former Everton and Manchester United forward Rooney came out of global retirement to feature for England against the United States on Thursday, as Gareth Southgate's side ran out 3-0 winners at Wembley.

Prior to the friendly, which was played in honour of the Wayne Rooney Foundation, Kane and FA chairman Greg Clarke made a presentation to the 33-year-old.

He emerged to take the captain's armband with the Three Lions well in control in front of a healthy crowd of 68,155.

England's Wayne Rooney applauds the fans after England defeated the United States at Wembley Stadium in London.

Sancho made his first start for the national team and also set up Trent Alexander-Arnold's goal but that wasn't his favourite moment of the night.

"He mucked in during training and worked hard in the five-a-sides and in the game he was tracking back. We've got a brilliant game to come now, this is what the Nations League is all about".

"If I had scored it would have opened a whole other debate about whether that goal should have counted or not, so it was probably a good thing I didn't".
