The ATP Cup, announced by the ATP and Tennis Australia on Thursday during the ATP Finals in London, will be played from 2020 across three Australian cities over 10 days in the lead-up to the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year, which starts in January.

Ranking points will be on offer along with an £11.35m prize pot, with qualification based on the ranking of the country's No 1 player.

"All of us players around the world are unified and united in this event", American player John Isner said.

Federer was upbeat about the new event and said the Davis Cup would not suffer.

"We'll make sure in 2020 we run a great event and we will do whatever we can in partnership with the Tour and others to ensure the Davis Cup is also a magnificent global event". "And now we have the ATP Cup that is definitely going to be right up there in terms of its value from the players' perspective". "It just happens that there's more team events, which I think the players are happy about".

ATP Player Council president Novak Djokovic, 31, has given his backing to the ATP Cup event: "I like that it's owned by ATP, by the players".

In May, ATP executive chairman Chris Kermode said staging both tournaments within six weeks would be "insane".

"I honestly don't think it's good for the sport. Everyone wants to be in tip-top shape come the Australian Open and this event is going to allow us to do that".

A revamped Davis Cup tournament will take place from November 2019, bringing together 18 nations in one place for a week at the end of the season.

The launch took place at the O2 Arena in London, where the men's tennis tour's flagship event, the ATP Finals, is now taking place.

'He's playing well, serving well, very aggressive, so I know what to expect'.

The format of the ATP Cup will see nations split into six groups, with eight teams emerging from the round-robin stage to compete in the knockout phase.

Cilic saved three break points to open the second set, but could do nothing in game number five, when the world number one got the first break of the match - which proved to be decisive.
