The Blaugrana have reportedly identified Ajax midfielder De Jong as their prime transfer target next summer.

The European champions are aware that Barcelona (whose interest has diluted in recent weeks) and Manchester City (Txiki Begiristain has met with Ajax and the player) are also interested.

De Jong played full 90 minutes against France in his side's 2-0 victory over the world champions on Friday in an worldwide fixture.

Ten Cate, who spent three years as assistant to Frank Rijkaard at Barcelona between 2003 and 2006, is not surprised his former side have targeted De Jong, suggesting he has similar attributes to two former Barca favourites. "It is always hard to compare players".

"They are two very talented players, although talent alone does not decide anything". They have talent and a good mind, which is very important.

"The logical thing is that they leave Ajax this season and I think it's the best decision for their careers". Madrid don't want to wait until the summer, like the Dutch club's sporting director Marc Overmars, because they're in a rush to sign him for the second half of the season. At their age, they have to play every week and the opportunities to play at Barça are not so great.

"They are players with many qualities, but to grow, they must play, not be on the bench".
