Preity was asked in an interview if she has experience harassment. A video doing the rounds on social media shows her laughing and saying, "No, I haven't". I wish I had. "I would have an answer to tell you". This was enough to invite backlash, as people termed her comments as "insensitive". She emphasised that she was a supporter of the movement and explained that when she wished for someone to make unwanted advances at her, she did so "because I would have reacted and slapped the person". In the interview, Preity Zinta responded to a question on whether she had a #MeToo story of her own with:"No".

Later Preity posted a long letter clarifying what she actually meant.

Preity also said that she did not want the movement to be diluted by women with false allegations because "My brother went through it and eventually shot himself".

For the uninitiated, Preity's cousin Nitin Chauhan committed suicide in 2016 and blamed his in-laws for forcing him to take the extreme step. "This is the power of the Me too movement & it's an encouraging start to a big change for the future", the actress said in a statement.

To all the women out there.

The #MeToo movement, which began in Hollywood more than a year ago, gathered steam in India after actor Tanushree Dutta acussed co-star Nana Patekar of allegedly harassing her on the sets of "Horn Ok Pleassss" in 2008.

In her statement, the 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' star said " I am a huge supporter of the movement and its unfortunate that some of my comments were taken out of context. So, it never happened and much later when it happened, I did react & the whole world saw it.

"Having said that, I recognise that not everyone is in a position to fight back and I don't want to marginalise the women that have been abused", Preity Zinta added in her statement today.

The Sweetu and MeToo comment was not mine, but I was quoting a man which implied that men are now cautious in their approach to women at work. Not everything is traction & as someone being interviewed, I expected decency & maturity from a journalist @iFaridoon.
