A tornado mainly went through the countryside, she said.

"It's a miracle no one was killed in the tragedy of these tornadoes", said Gov. Bruce Rauner, who toured the area on Sunday. Preliminary estimates indicate that storm may have produced winds of up to 130 mph (209 kilometres per hour).

Meteorologist Dan Smith with the weather service's Lincoln, Illinois, office says crews had confirmed 23 tornado touchdowns across central Illinois by Monday afternoon.

At least 12 were reported in IL on Saturday. Multiple homes, boats and power lines were destroyed.

Up to three other tornadoes are being investigated in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas.

Severe thunderstorms also raked IL and Missouri on Saturday. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Residents in central IL assessed damage Sunday after tornadoes ripped roofs off homes, downed power lines, and injured at least 20 people the day before.

Among the hardest hit areas appears to be Taylorville, a small town that sits about 25 miles South and East of Springfield.

Taylorville's assistant fire chief, Andy Goodall, estimated that more than 100 homes were damaged, while Country Classic Cars Dealership owner Russel Noel said about 200 vehicles were damaged by the tornadoes.

May is typically the peak month with about 15 tornadoes. Officials say 21 people were hospitalized there, one critically, and crews responded to over a dozen houses that contained trapped people, per ABC News. Majority were discharged within hours of their arrival. No reports of fatalities have been recorded in IL, although one person has been killed in neighbouring Missouri as a result of the storms.
