Numerous presents had been given to the royal couple yesterday at a party they threw at Kensington Palace in London for the wives, husbands, children and parents of staff from RAF Coningsby and RAF Marham, who will be spending Christmas away from home.

She said: "But I can't imagine how it feels when your loved ones are away on active service over Christmas or at those special family moments".

"The absence of people you love must be especially hard at this time of year", the royal continued.

Speaking in front of a crowd of RAF personnel and soldiers from the 2 Mercian Regiment, Prince William said: "As we approach Christmas, Catherine and I feel strongly that praise for your work and recognition of your sacrifices is exactly what is due to you all".

She was hit with a mock snowball, but it was all in good spirits.

"We know this isn't easy for you or for your wives, husbands, children, and friends back in the UK".

He went on to quip 'Do you want me to move out of the photo?', in order to let Kate pose by herself. Five-year-old Harry is being looked after for six months by his grandparents.

She, along with Prince William, paid a visit to Cyprus to attend the opening of Oasis, a recreation center where servicemen can get some quiet time to contact their families.

'Kate was asking Harry where his mummy and daddy were and she said to me it's quite a commitment but it was great for the family to have us pulling everything together.

The party was thrown to lend support to the families who may be separate from their loved ones this holiday season while they serve in the military.

William and Kate met a boy whose dad is in Cyprus, while his mum posted to Afghanistan.

Her husband said: "We see our main function as giving my daughter and her husband peace of mind".

He also praised the sacrifices of their families, many of whom the couple had met on Tuesday, when they held a party at Kensington Palace and collected gifts to transport to the base.
