Reading have confirmed the sacking of Paul Clement as manager after a poor start to the season.

Clement arrived at the Madejski Stadium in late March and successfully steered the Royals away from relegation to the third tier.

"Owners Mr Yongge Dai and Ms Xiu Li Dai have made the hard decision that the time is now right to make a change", read a statement on the club's website on Thursday.

"CEO Nigel Howe will now seek to swiftly identify and appoint a new manager who will fit the Reading mould, build a team which can deliver performances and results that will help us climb the Championship table and lead the club towards promotion in the future".

Clement's departure from Reading sees his struggles as a manager continue.

Assistant manager Nigel Howe and Under 23s boss Scott Marshall have been put in temporary charge of first-team affairs, including Saturday's home clash with Sheffield United (5.30pm ko).

"The club will make no additional comment at this time but will provide further updates as soon as possible".

The Royals have had a poor start to the season and now hover above the relegation zone in 21st place.

Clement joined Reading in March after Jaap Stam departed and helped them avoid dropping into League One on the final day of the 2017-18 campaign.
