Chicago-area companies among best places to work in US

As expected, there are conflicting reviews about all large companies.

One Googler in NY notes that the company's growing pains include "bureaucracy, slow to respond to market threats, bloated teams, cross-divisional tension, though nothing remotely approaching Microsoft's internal tension".

It is possible that Facebook slipped in the list this year because of all the controversies that have surrounded it.

Tech companies took a third of the top spots in terms of best places to work based on employee ratings, according to a Glassdoor report.

Employee satisfaction at Facebook has taken a big hit in the past year, according to new research from Glassdoor.

The Glassdoor list also hints at the trend that the world - and tech employees - probably no longer look at the Silicon Valley companies with rose-tinted glasses.

Opportunities for advancement also got mentioned by workers. Employees on the site praised Facebook for its compensation and benefits, giving it a 4.6 rating out of 5, according to Glassdoor.

Other tech giants in the top 50 include Google at #8, Salesforce in 11 place, Adobe at #30, Microsoft in the 34 position, Nvidia at 36, Blizzard Entertainment at 42 and SpaceX at 48.

Search giant Google came in eighth place in 2018, following a stronger performance the year prior (fifth). Others companies that made the cut are lesser known but are still providing exceptional experiences for their employees. Workers' concerns - and protests - over how the military could use Google's technology contributed to executives' decision to pull a bid for a $10 billion cloud contract with the Pentagon.

Southwest Airlines leaped a number of spots from last year, when it ranked 23rd, to make the top 10 this year. In the first quarter of 2018, Facebook's employee satisfaction rating was at 4.6. In its methodology, Glassdoor says it "is committed to the highest level of data integrity and reviews quality, including treating all employers equally, regardless of whether they are a customer of Glassdoor". One of the reviews by an Anglian Water Asset Delivery Manager (Lincoln, England UK) said: "The workforce is clearly proud, passionate and really cares about the work they do, which results in a really positive culture and working environment".
