Aston Martin Reveals Electric DB6 Volante as Conceptual EV Conversion

Given the historical significance of a lot of classic collectors cars Aston Martin says it is vital any EV conversion is "sympathetic to the integrity of the original car" and that the cassette system offers the ideal solution - offering owners the "reassurance of knowing their vehicle is future-proofed and socially responsible", yet still with the ability to reinstate the original powertrain if desired.

The first classic auto to receive Aston Martin's "cassette" EV powertrain is the 1970 DB6 MkII Volante.

Once in place, umbilical cords from the power unit feed the car's electrical systems, with power management operated via a dedicated screen in the cabin.

First to be equipped with the new "cassette" electric powertrain is a 1970 DB6 MkII Volante, the company said. Talk about going full circle. The conversion is built around what Aston calls a "cassette" EV powertrain.

There's also the social implications of owning and driving a dirty, old internal combustion vehicle when electric power is prevalent. But if it's a little better for the environment, silent is better than sitting in a museum. When went on to say "Our Second Century Plan not only encompasses our new and future models, but also protects our treasured heritage".

Aston Martin has revealed a new package allowing owners to make their classics electric.

We have the Rapide E program to thank for the development of this system, and we have a feeling that the owners of the 1970s and '80s Lagonda sedans will be among the first to make the switch to make their cars more, ahem, usable on a daily basis, perhaps opting to replace the troublesome instrument panels with touchscreen displays.

This electrification concept has been led by Aston Martin Works. Heritage EV conversions are expected to start in 2019. Indeed, the EV powertrain conversion can be reversed at any time if the owner wishes.
