A Southwest Airlines flight arriving at Burbank Airport from Oakland skidded off the runway after landing Thursday morning. Flight 278, carrying 112 passengers and five crew, had just landed in Burbank on a flight from Oakland, said Brandy King, a spokeswoman for the Dallas-based carrier.

According to reports, the plane initiated its emergency stop system once it rolled off the runway at Bob Hope Airport, also known as Hollywood Burbank Airport. The plane rolled off the end of Runway 8 and came to a stop in an area created to slow down planes that overshoot the runway.

There are no reported injuries. "They go over these E-MAS beds and the landing gear slowly sinks into these blocks of crushable concrete", Yakel said.

Clapping erupted on the plane after it came to a stop, passengers who were grateful to the pilot for his response said.

Passengers said they were told to stay on the plane until responders checked that it was safe for them to leave.

Flights from other airlines were continuing to depart from Burbank.

One of the airport's runways is closed but the airport is open, and all airlines are operational, according to the airport Twitter account.

No one was injured in the incident that occurred about 9:05 a.m. local time. Its monthly average is 2.4 inches.
