On the backdrop of the Kedarnath pilgrimage, the film reportedly portrays a Hindu woman played by Sara Ali Khan falling for a Muslim guide essayed by Sushant Rajput whereas the pony walas in Uttarakhand are Nepali Hindus and not Muslims.

Talking more about the film, the actor said: "Working on this film has been very challenging because we have worked in extreme conditions, shot in freezing cold in Kedarnath and then shot in bombay in extreme heat... but it was worth it". Moreover the reception is better as well which means ultimately this Abhishek Kapoor directed affair could sail through. A decision to this effect was taken after a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat reviewed the report submitted by a committee headed by Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj. District magistrates were informed about this by late evening and they promptly passed orders banning the film, citing threat of disruption of peace.

Following this, all the DM's have banned the film's release in their districts.

Ajay said, "The movie appears to be an effort to promote love jihad".

Consequently, the state government set up a four-member committee comprising Tourism Minister Maharaj, home secretary, information secretary and DGP to examine the objections against the film. The remaining six districts of the state do not have cinema halls. The Gujarat High court called the action a publicity stunt and the extreme Hindu outfits are making it a big issue. "He claimed that the state government will make a stringent law to ensure such an act is not repeated in future".

In Kedarnath, Sushant essays the role of a cheerful and hard-working Muslim pithoo who carries the devotees on his back to the Kedarnath shrine for livelihood, while Sara essays the role of a bubbly Hindu devotee who falls in love with her bearer.
