It should be noted that the last time the mafia was going through a hard period of reorganization that is associated with a long absence of rigid centralized management. He was reportedly elected Cosa Nostra godfather at a Mafia meeting in May.

Settimo Mineo, 80, a lifelong member of the Sicilian mob who was recently released from prison, was allegedly appointed godfather at a secret summit in May to replace the mafia hitman Toto Riina, who died in jail a year ago.

He reportedly told his driver about details of the May 29 Cupola meeting, describing it as "a lovely meeting, very serious, with country people, old people".

Italy's military police descended upon Palermo, Sicily at the break of dawn Tuesday to arrest the alleged leader of Sicily's notorious Mafia, also known as the Cosa Nostra, ANSA reported.

"These people, despite being heads of families, were kept outside because only regional bosses could take part".

It was the first time clan leaders had gathered in such a forum for years, and followed the November 2017 death of Riina, prosecutors said.

A massive police operation led to the arrest of 80-year-old Settimo Mineo, said to be the new leader of the Cosa Nostra - the most prominent organized crime group on the island of Sicily - as well as 46 suspected members of the mob, the police said in a statement cited by Efe news.

Italian media describe him as the successor to Toto Riina, who died in jail a year ago.

Palermo prosecutor Francesco Lo Voi recalled that Mineo had already served a lengthy prison sentence for Mafia association and other crimes after he was swept up in the maxi-trials against the Sicilian Mafia in the 1980s and 90s.

The country's deputy prime minister Luigi di Maio, announcing the arrests, said they "represent one of the biggest blows inflicted on the mafia by the state". "There is no longer room for this scum in Italy", Di Maio wrote on Facebook. Six months later Riina was arrested.

Falcone was murdered in a massive vehicle bombing in 1992.
