The Los Angeles Sparks have named five-time National Basketball Association champion and former New York Knicks boss Derek Fisher as their new head coach.

This will be Fisher's first coaching position since being fired 54 games into his second season as coach of the NBA's New York Knicks in 2016. He was hired in 2014, but was sacked less than two seasons into a five-year deal. He went 17-65 in 2014-15 as a rookie head coach and was sacked the following season with the Knicks sporting a 23-31 record. "I'm certain Derek will not only build on the Sparks championship culture, but also play an instrumental role in all the work we do in the Los Angeles community". Agler led the Sparks to the 2016 championship and is the only coach to have led two different franchises to the WNBA title.

Fisher, 44, has not coached at any level since the 2015-16 National Basketball Association season. He spent time with the Lakers (13 seasons), Thunder (three seasons), Warriors (two seasons), Jazz (one season) and Mavericks (one season).

"Derek is a champion and proven leader on and off the court", Toler said in a statement.

The Sparks announced the move Wednesday, five days after longtime WNBA coach Brian Agler resigned.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Fisher will officially be introduced at a press conference on Friday afternoon in Los Angeles.

He has now found his way back to coaching, but in the WNBA.
