But complications with the player's medical saw the deal collapse after concerns about Fekir's right knee.

President Jean-Michel Aulas is renowned for being a stubborn businessman but now does not want to risk losing the player for cheap as his contract runs down.

Liverpool looked to have a deal for Lyon playmaker Nabil Fekir all sewn up before the Frenchman flew off to the World Cup, only for their last-ditch demand to lower the asking price to scupper the plan.

Fekir's current deal has just 18 months left until it expires.

Lyon have reportedly told Nabil Fekir he must decide on his future by the end of 2018, as transfer rumours continue to follow the player after the dramatic breakdown of a summer move to Liverpool.

Lyon will do all they can to tie their captain down to a new contract.

"For the moment, we have not really had a real discussion, even if we met three weeks ago".

After grabbing a goal and an assist to help Lyon record a 2-1 win over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League in September, he played a similarly key role in their 2-2 draw with the Sky Blues in November and Chelsea would be having a close eye on him as a replacement for Eden Hazard who can leave Stamford Bridge this winter.

"The sorting out of certain things regarding the question of his agent is underway".

"The aim, is to have a clear and precise position from his point of view between now and the end of the year".
