Lingard's exertions came at a cost, though, as a groin injury that he had carried since Russian Federation lied him low for a month, with the attacking midfielder only scoring his first United goal of the season when securing Wednesday's 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal.

While there were signs of promise for the much-changed hosts, the result represented a fourth straight winless Premier League match for under-performing United.

Darmian's words were echoed by fellow United defender Diogo Dalot, who labelled Mourinho "one of the best coaches ever".

"We sleep thinking about (getting into the top four) and we wake up thinking about that and for sure we will get there".

"I think it's always been that we never give up - you've seen over the years the comebacks that United have made so for us to just keep that spirit alive and never give up is good, but of course going in front would help", said Lingard.

"I need to adapt considering the team I'm now playing in, the coach and the league I am playing in". It was an enjoyable summer and a good season for me on a personal level last season. "Try to work harder and try to do what we are doing to try to win as many games as possible".

Jose Mourinho has had a tough start to the season, but Diogo Dalot is thrilled to be playing under his compatriot (Martin Rickett/PA).

"I needed to be ready to come here and to settle here", the Portuguese said. I am still learning, it is not ideal.

Arsenal lost Rob Holding to a serious-looking knee injury (Martin Rickett/PA).

I played [against Arsenal] and scored and now I am raring to go.

United have conceded the first goal in nine of their 15 games this season.

"His performance is improving, each player with taking confidence, with taking responsibility also, helping each other, every player", Emery told reporters.
