Trump Told Associate to Stop Calling John Kelly

The report was published shortly after the outlet revealed that Kelly is likely to be ousted from the White House in the coming days and that he's no longer talking to President Donald Trump.

Kelly's interview is of particular note, as he was appointed by the president in the summer of 2017, while numerous other Trump-tied figures caught in the Mueller probe are being questioned about their time with Trump during the 2016 election.

Ayers is considered one of the best political strategists in Mr. Trump's circle, and advocates say he could provide crucial help to the White House, as previous chiefs of staff have, in meshing with and reinforcing the re-election campaign messaging, strategy, presidential travel and fundraising.

CNN reported last month that Trump was considering potential replacements for several senior positions in his administration as part of a post-midterms staff shakeup.

This is is far from the first time Kelly has been rumoured to be on the brink. But this past summer, Kelly sought to quiet speculation that he was nearing the exist because of tensions with Trump by telling senior staff that he meant to remain as chief of staff through Trump's 2020 re-election campaign. Lights are off in Kelly's office this morning, per a senior admin official.

Among White House officials, however, there is broad consensus that his days as chief of staff are numbered. But as of an hour ago, he hadn't been fired or resigned.

He told reporters that Barr, who led the Justice Department under former president George HW Bush, was "my first choice since day one" and said is "a terrific man, a terrific person, a brilliant man".
