Skoda Scala to become the new Rapid

The Škoda Scala will launch in the first half of 2019.

The new auto debuts what Skoda calls a "more emotional" design language, and takes design cues from the Vision RS concept that was displayed at the Paris motor show earlier this year.

The Scala is based on Skoda's latest design language, so you can expect the look to be carried over to other cars as well. There will be more storage too, with the Scala's square roofline and 467 litre boot being a significant upgrade on the 375 litres found in the back of the Focus. In Skoda's global lineup, the Scala is the first Skoda to be based on Volkswagen Group's new MQB AO platform. Some of the styling cues that are shared with the concept include the optional all-glass rear window, which replaces a more traditional tailgate and features the word "Skoda" written out in place of a logo (the manufacturer's first vehicle to do so). The model is nearly 2 meters wide (1,988mm with mirrors), has a 2,649mm wheelbase and measures 4,362mm from bumper to bumper.

Skoda says the larger dimensions have helped increase interior space, while cargo space is also up from the Rapid's 384 litres or 1349L with the rear seats folded, to 467L/1410L in the Scala. It comes with freestanding touchscreen infotainment system, which can be paired with an optional 10.25-inch virtual cockpit display. Updates to the car's infotainment system and satellite navigation can be delivered over the air (OTA) via the built-in SIM card, which connects to the Internet.

The Skoda Scala hatchback will be available in 3 petrol and 1 diesel engine options - two 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrols that offers 99bhp and 115bhp, a 150bhp, 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol and a 115bhp, 1.6-litre dieesel.

The gasoline trio is comprised of a 1.0 litre TSI three-potter engine, making two states of tunes - 95 PS/175 Nm and 115 PS/200 Nm. The petrol range starts with the turbocharged three-cylinder 1.0 TSI with 95PS or 115PS.

Five- and six-speed manuals and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will be offered, depending on the powerplant. Buyers can also opt for an optional sport chassis, which will reduce the ride height by 15mm. This sportier version will also offer four driving modes for better throttle response and steering. "It is an all-new model that sets benchmarks within its segment in terms of technology, safety and design", he said.

Safety wise it features up to nine airbags, LED head and tail-lights as standard, Multi-Collision Brake and Crew Protect Assist that automatically closes all windows and pre-tensions the front seatbelts in the event of an impending crash.
