They later lied to the gynaecologist at Jodhpur Umaid Hospital that they had finished the delivery.

The two nurses have been suspended and an investigation is underway.

The nurse was allegedly left holding the baby's torso while its decapitated head was left inside the mum's body in the reported horrific incident on January 6.

In June previous year, a British gynaecologist was found guilty of medical misconduct, after she accidentally decapitated an unborn baby in the womb.

The incident took place at a hospital in Jaisalmer's Ramgarh.

In a shocking incident, a male nurse at a government hospital in Rajasthan's Ramgarh district is said to have botched a difficult delivery during which he pulled the foetus so hard that it broke into two parts.

"We have registered a case against two staffers of Ramgarh hospital and have interrogated them", he was quoted as saying. She was then sent to Jodhpur in a serious condition. The doctor wasn't present there, and the compounder called another person to help him during the delivery. They then informed his family to take the woman, Dikhsha Kanwar, to another hospital in the city of Jaisalmer, without informing them of what happened.

Later, a team of doctors headed by Dr Ravindra Sankhla operated the victim again and found that the foetus' head was left in the mother's womb.

Dr Usha Duggad, principal medical officer at Jawahar government hospital said it was a rare case. The family reached Ramgarh police station on Wednesday and lodged a case against the two nurses. "It was a pre-term baby", he added. "I will prepare a complete report on the incident and hand it over to health directorate", he said.
